Day Trip: Ascend to Spring Mountain

Wine Spectator Map Inset

While there is no shortage of wineries to visit along the north-south corridor of the valley floor, the surrounding mountains are well worth exploring. A drive into the elevated terrain offers both an important view of the region and a break from the congestion below. Mt. Veeder and Howell Mountain each are home to impressive sites, but Spring Mountain, just west of St. Helena, offers the greatest concentration of recommended spots to visit.

Spring Mountain Road becomes increasingly narrow, steep and winding as it ascends, and the drive up affords only occasional glimpses of the vineyards.

Spring Mountain Vineyard is one of the most picturesque places in all of Napa, with meticulously cared for grounds. There's plenty to take in among the caves, vineyards, greenhouse and gardens, while the property's Villa Miravalle, built in 1885, is one of the more splendid historic mansions around. There are a few tasting choices, from a basic stand-up tasting to options more intimate and refined, including an opportunity for a sit-down tasting in a chandeliered room in the villa.
