2016 Elivette 96 Points

Lush boysenberry, blackberry and plum fruit cascades forth here, backed by streaks of charcoal, dark tobacco and roasted apple wood on the finish. Shows heft as well as mouthwatering cut, with a buried iron note resonating through the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Malbec. Best from 2023 through 2040. From California. –J.M.

ABOUT THIS WINE: Spring Mountain Vineyard is one of Napa’s most intriguing estates. It is a combination of four properties melded together over the years, all with histories going back to the 19th century. Today, Spring Mountain’s plantings cover 225 acres of hillsides, comprising 135 distinct vineyard blocks. These are, in turn, situated on eight soil series covering every exposure on the compass and ranging in elevation from 400 to 1,600 feet. With this diversity in hand and through sustainable practices, in top vintages the winemaking team produces a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Malbec from their best-performing parcels. After each parcel's harvest is separately vinified, Spring Mountain labels the resultant blend “Elivette.” –James Molesworth
